Millennial Careers: 2020 Vision

What do Millennials expect from their job? What career development and training opportunities do they want? What would make them stay with a company? And how is Generation Y planning for its careers ahead?

By 2020, Millennials - people born between 1982 and 1996 - will make up over a third of the workforce. To help companies better understand this generation's expectations and career goals, ManpowerGroup conducted a global survey across 25 countries, surveying 19,000 Millennials.

Here are the key findings in Switzerland:

  • 53% of Swiss Millenials expect to work beyond the age of 65 - 8% do not think they will ever retire.
  • 87% of Swiss Millennials work more than 40 hours a week – and 22% actually work over 50 hours.
  • 84% of them foresee taking significant breaks in their professional career.
  • 69% of Swiss Millenials are intending to spend time and money on further training –even if they have to pay for it themselves- and 77% think it is essential to continue broadening their skills throughout their careers.
  • 93% of Millennials in Switzerland show a moderate to high ability to learn new skills. To keep Millenials at their company, Swiss employers should take this into account. Unsurprisingly, there is a positive correlation between career success and a person’s ability to learn.
  • Generation Y in Switzerland is also open to non-traditional forms of employment - 42% are willing to work on a freelance basis, doing gig work or taking up a portfolio career – i.e. working multiple jobs – in the near future, despite the risks associated with these forms of employment.
